Here's some rule of thumb guidelines for choosing laser rather than inkjet printers:
If you print a lot of mono (black only) pages, choose a mono laser printer.
If you print a lot of brochure-style pages, you might prefer the look of colour laser printing.
If you want to print nice photos, a colour inkjet using photo paper gives you the best look by far.
For the best economy, choose ink-jet (but not the low-end models).
Colour laser printing is more expensive than inkjet because colour laser printers have to make four passes per page even if you only print one clour e.g. black only pages. This creates wear on all the components e.g. toner cartridges, drum cartridges and transfer belt. In addition to that, there is a fusing assembly that uses heat to melt the toner on to the pages and typically a waste bottle that needs to be replaced periodically. All this adds up to a lot of wearable and replaceable parts. Inkjet printers are much simpler. They spray ink on to the paper as it passes the printhead.
